I have never had a watch like this before,1st time I have not had to add links to a watch strap as my wrist is ever so large(ROFL).I was pleasently surprised at how it felt on the wrist, even more surprised that as yet I have not been able to scratch or damage the metal on top after banging into granit walls and other objects, just under 3 months since i got it!!!. If your very heavy handed like I am then this is the watch for you, I’m into watches that tell very acurate time and hate watches that lose or gain. That being from being on holiday in UK mainland in the early 70’s and when the old British Railways were as acurate as the old Time Signal station at Greenwhich, I missed my connection due to my ever trusty Certenia watch having lost 2 minutes and me watching the train pulling out of the London station just as I was getting to the station 2 minutes late!!.That was first and last time I missed connections as I found watches that got the time from Time Signal stations there after,I’ve had 3 watches since then and all have lasted 10 or so years or longer. My trusty Jughans Mega Solar bit the dust after 12 years of excelent service and found out that Jughans dont seem tobe making radio controled watches any more, hence the need to get a new watch!!. This Casio Mens Digital Bracelet Watch-GW-800D-1VER is as good a replacement as I could find in Solar powered watches to replace my now defunct Jughans radio controled watch, it took some getting used to but find this watch is just as good as my old Jughans ever was, even got some extra features which is a bonus and a novelty!!.The one thing that did come as a shock is that it hunts for Time Signal stations if it misses a time update, even checking the WWHV Time signal station from the U.S.A. My Jughans only did Germany/Rugby stations.I’m very happy with this solar powered radio controled watch from Casio, the only thing that could be better is the volume of the alarm and on the hour time pips!!

I work in an area where I need a watch that I don’t have to worry about getting dirty or wet and this was great for 18 months. After that the strap housing started to come loose, as the strap is moulded to the watch body itself it started to cause a problem with dirt catching inside the hinge. I couldn’t find anywhere that could fix it there and then so I’m in the process of sending it off for repairs. But the compass and all other functions are great, solar power guage never went below “HIGH” for as long as I’ve had it. As with the above review, the barimoter/altimeter isn’t perfect as they run from each other’s data, e.g. the altimeter will use the temperature as well as the atmospheric pressure to give you a correct reading of height above sea level, and if one isn’t set properly, the other suffers.

All the features of the big Protrek’s but in a smaller more compact case! This watch packs a full feature set in to a compact sleek package. The hosts of features are ideal for anyone involved with outdoor activities. A really nice feature of this watch is it sophisticated stopwatch / count down timer which is ideal for anyone who trains in extreme conditions. One final nifty feature not found in the Protreks is a radial pseudo analog indicator of altitude or time enabling you to glance at the watch / obtain a relative indication of altitude or time.

Review
Let’s start by saying that this watch does have all that I wanted – LCD, solar powered, radio controlled, electroluminescent backlight, black body and strap. It’s the only watch I could find with all of these features, and that’s why I bought it. They all work as advertised.
There’s an awful lot to this watch, and you’ll need to sit down with the manual for a little while when you first get it. There are several options that might not be set by default as you prefer them. In particular, it’s necessary to start by setting your home time zone. This is done by choosing a ‘home city’ from a fairly short list (28 worldwide). Even after choosing London, I found that mine was initially set to GMT, and I had to tell it to recalibrate itself before it switched to BST. I also had to tell it that I wanted it to use the 24-hour clock instead of 12-hour. Having done that, everything works exactly as I wanted.
But what could be better? Well, I have very narrow wrists for a man. I’d happily lose a load of functions that I don’t need – eg, stopwatch, world time, countdown timer, even the alarm – for something slimmer and with a softer strap. I also don’t need the ruggedness. (And what use is water-resistance at 200m to someone who can’t read a watch without spectacles and so never wants to wear one whilst swimming? I only need to it to cope with getting caught out in the rain.) I also have a basic Casio W-59 watch, and find that significantly more comfortable to wear. Unfortunately, that one has a poor backlight, and isn’t radio controlled.
The supplied manual is horrible to use – it’s very thick, but the pages are only 85mm x 50mm in landscape format. The English version runs to 79 of these tiny pages, and it also contains German, French, Spanish and Italian texts. I found it easier to download and print a manual from Casio’s web site, and use that. The English .pdf version takes 6 pages of A4. Having said that, the instructions in the manual are clear and easy to follow. It’s module no. 3063 if you want to look at the manual before buying.
Unlike another reviewer, my experience of the radio control feature is that it does only work as described in the manual and isn’t any better. My watch won’t recalibrate itself if left on the table beside my bed: I do have to leave it on the windowsill overnight if I want it to set itself automatically. Even there, the signal strength is only level 1, the lowest of three usable steps on the scale. I live at the bottom of the south (scarp) side of the North Downs, so perhaps the hills interfere with the radio signal from Cumbria. I guess that the other reviewer gets a better signal. Nonetheless, it does work, and I get the accuracy that I wanted (which, to be honest, is greater than I really need in everyday life). It also switches automatically between GMT and BST.

A watch is a tool to do a job, ok several jobs. This one just works. It’s comfortable to wear (no hard button edges like another Casio solar powered watch). The main display is very quick to read thanks to the large digits. Time shows in a small window in other functions. Buttons are generally tucked away enough to not be accidentally pressed. The battery charges enough that I never need to make an effort to ensure it’s getting enough light – it’s always full. The alarm is not the loudest I’ve heard but it’s enough to wake me up, except on time I was sleeping with my arm under the pillow.
The backlight is bright enough across the whole face; I don’t use the auto-activate feature, just haven’t found a need for it but when I tried it it seemed to do the job well enough.
Waterproof, compass, good stopwatch (goes beyond 1 hour which many don’t), countdown timer, all the things I need.
Three small niggles:
1 – setting the countdown timer uses a multifunction button and I haven’t figured a way to select just one function without it also invoking the other.
2 – the keeper on the strap is not very good, it’s small so often slides off the strap end leaving it flapping. I will experiment with gluing mine in place, but it’s irritating to have to, Casio have produced other watches with big fixed keepers so I don’t know why they chose not to with this one.
3 – there’s no press-and-hold quick return to the main time display after using another function, some models have this, it would be useful here.
